This book was exactly what I was looking for and I didn’t even know I was looking!  I knew I had to read it from the moment I first knew it existed!!

Mom Blogging for Dummies by Wendy Piersall

What a great kick in the bottom to get going with this blog!  I had no idea that there was a whole BOOK about Mom Blogging!  I was also really excited because I really like the ‘for dummies’ series.  So as soon as I found out about the book, I called my local library to reserve a copy.  The librarian had to order it because it’s actually a pretty new book.  Guess when I did that?  JULY!!!  I didn’t actually get the book in my hands until NOVEMBER!

Let me tell you, it was worth the wait.  This book was extremely helpful and covered what I can only assume is absolutely everything one needs to know to grow their blog and make money from it / because of it.  It was amazing and gets my highest recommendation if you are a mom blogger.  (I think it would even be very helpful for regular bloggers.)

I took twenty pages of notes.  Twenty.  Front and back!

Some of the Great Tips from Mom Blogging for Dummies
Piersall gives SO MUCH information in this book so I want to highlight some of the best tips and advice that I found helpful to me, but you really should get the book to get more details and the rest of the great ideas she offers.

* Find and Focus on Your Niche.  Piersall really stresses this in the book.  You need to find out which topics interest you, you’re passionate about, and about which you have experience.  Your niche can fall under the umbrella of Mom Blogging.

* Be Professional.  This is something I really agree with.  “The Internet is not written in pencil; it’s written in ink” (The Social Network).  Even when you think no one cares or no one you know reads it, if you insult people on your blog, anybody can find it; things on the internet never really go away even if you delete them.  You should also know that if you use obscene language, it could be a red flag to potential advertisers, clients or brands.

* Network.  I like this one because I love meeting other moms and making bloggy friends.  <3  She pointed out that you never know what opportunities might come up through a contact you’ve made.

* Search Engine Optimization.  This is something about which I know virtually nothing.  The author gives some great tips SEO and has inspired me to learn more.

* Social Media.  Piersall talks about this a lot in her book!  Twitter and Facebook (and probably Google + which kind of blew up in the bloggy world after this book was published) are so important to help “build your brand”.  One thing I’d really like to pass on to you (and I hope she doesn’t mind me sharing this) is her Twitter Marketing Ideal Ratio.

Here’s what you should do on Twitter:
10% Self Promotion
20% Promoting others
30% Being a Resource to the Community
40% Conversations – “Interactions to Reinforce your Brand”
I think this is SO helpful; no one likes to follow someone who does nothing but promote her own blog, etsy store, etc.  This is something I’m trying to improve.
* Advertising and Affiliate Marketing.  This book contains so many tips on how to make money blogging – I love it!  You can accept and search out your own advertising, join ad networks and use affiliate links to make money.  In addition to making money from your blog, you can get job offers and other opportunities because of your blog, which she talks about at length.
* Expanding your Blog.  This is something that’s a little ahead of the place where I am right now, but hopefully I can use it in the future.
* Top 10 Pitfalls to Avoid.  There are a lot of legal guidelines and issues surrounding blogging so Piersall instructs us to know the FTC Guidelines, CAN-spam laws and the rules for doing Giveaways and Product Reviews.  There are also a lot of things you need to know about the tax laws – your blog business, accepting free products, advertising, etc.
* Piersall’s List of Top 10 Mom Bloggers AND their advice.  Each of her picks gives us 3 Tips to Success.  I know I’m going to check these ladies out because they’re doing it right.
There are so many more great pointers in this book and some of them have step-by-step instructions.  It is so thorough and helpful!
Most of all, I loved this book because it gave me hope.  Piersall truly believes that the Mom Blogging sphere will never be saturated and that there will always be room for more Mom Bloggers if they bring some unique qualities.  (And read her book of course! <– My opinion)  As you may or may not know, I am lucky enough to be a Stay at Home Mom but we have to struggle to pay the bills.  Plus we live with my parents and I really don’t want to go back to work.  I am bound and determined to find success on the internet and I am very committed to this blog.  <3
From the 20 pages of notes I took, I created a to do list (1 page – front and back) and completing that list is my New Year’s Resolution.
At the risk of looking like a complete dork, I have to share with you one more thing!  I sent out a tweet saying I was going to post this book review soon and guess who responded?!  None other than the AUTHOR OF THE BOOK, Wendy Piersall!!  Check it out:
